Chiropractic Adjustments
Although we are a multidisciplinary chiropractic clinic offering a variety of non-invasive treatments in Baltimore MD, Laurel MD, and Takoma Park MD, one of the most common treatments we provide for our patients is a chiropractic adjustment.
What is a chiropractic adjustment?
Chiropractic adjustments are also known as manual manipulation, chiropractic manipulation, or spinal manipulation. This treatment is commonly performed by a chiropractor to treat lower back pain or neck pain, along with a wide range of other musculoskeletal conditions.
This manual treatment method was developed following the concept that spinal dysfunction can cause pain by altering the function of the nervous system. Spinal manipulation was the first type of chiropractic adjustment approach to be developed. The overall goal of this approach is to restore joint functioning and reduce pain.
What happens during the treatment session?
During a chiropractic adjustment, the chiropractor applies controlled pressure to the vertebrae of the spine which are failing to move normally. The goal of this treatment is to restore normal functioning and range of motion.
There are dozens of variations on this form of chiropractic adjustment. Usually, they involve a short, high-velocity thrust applied to the vertebra. These are known as high-velocity low-amplitude or HVLA spinal manipulations.
Treatments can vary considerably depending on the chiropractor's approach and the specific physical concerns being treated. Your positioning while the adjustments are performed, for instance, will depend on your individual situation. Some adjustments may feel forceful, while others less so. The pressure may be applied by the chiropractor's hands or with a number of small instruments designed for this purpose.
What about joints cracking?
It is common for the joints to "crack" or "pop" during a chiropractic adjustment. This is caused by a harmless release of gas which occurs when joint pressure is alleviated. This sensation typically results in minimal, if any, discomfort; some patients find that the release of this built-up pressure provides immediate relief.
Chiropractic adjustments are performed by a trained specialist with extensive knowledge of the musculoskeletal system, particularly the spine. Each movement is chosen specifically to correct structural alignment issues in the spine. This highly controlled procedure rarely causes discomfort; each adjustment is adapted to meet the specific needs of the patient.
